Cadbury Dairy Milk, the nation’s top selling chocolate bar, is going Fairtrade!
In a groundbreaking move, Cadbury are now working with the Fairtrade Foundation to make Dairy Milk chocolate Fairtrade in the UK and Ireland by the end of Summer 2009.
This move will make a huge difference to the lives of thousands of farmers in Ghana who will now benefit from Fairtrade prices for their crops.
That's what Tearfund said, and according to the Cadbury's Dairy Milk website it is true! Hoorah!
I loved it anyway, and now I love it even more.

Thanks for the info, but I must come to another conclusion... I may begin to avoid Cadbury just like I attempt to avoid other "Fair" trade items. IMO, free Trade is the only true 'fair trade'.

I did an essay about this at university (how is it related to Optometry, I hear you cry!), in essence I agree - free trade would certainly be better than fairtrade. However, there need to be massive steps for free trade to be realised, and I think at the moment it just isn't going to happen. Also, I'm not entirely sure that the Adam Smith institutes arguments are completely correct, so I think that though free trade is definitely better in the end as it's scope is more universal, it is such a big step and currently unachievable, so I support fair trade because I think it does a lot of good, and is (in my opinion) better than nothing.
P.S. My essay was criticised for being too verbose... I think I just fell into the same trap, sorry!
